2010 LACUE Video Contest

The LACUE 2009 Student Video Contest was a smash success.   Here are the numbers.

·         118 teams registered to produce and submit videos

·         55 schools are represented in the registrants

·         21 Parishes are represented in the registrants

·         Out of the 118 registrants we received 75 videos (15 were disqualified for being either too short or too long & 1 was broken and would not play)

·         We had 11 judges.  3 judged Middle School, 3 judged High School, and 6 judged Elementary.

·         The judges were two classroom teachers, 3 engineers, 3 middle managers, 2 executive level managers, 1 veterinarian, and 2 full time moms.

Among the winners –

·         9 teams

·         8 schools

·         7 Parishes

·         What an amazing experience this has been for us, and we know for many teachers and students across the state.

We are sorry not to have been equipped to make the videos available this past year for viewing other than at the conference, but with the coming year we are planning to have that capacity.

So much for last year.  For 2010 many of the guidelines remain the same with a few tweaks toward improving the process.  Here are the important details.

                LACUE 2010 Conference – Dec 1st thru 3rd

Deadline to Register to Participate – Oct 1, 2010

Deadline to Submit Video – Nov 5, 2010

                Announcement of Winners – Nov 22, 2010

Details for this year are available on the LACUE website at www.lacue.org.   Please take some time to review them and consider planning to get your students involved.   By popular demand we will add a category for pre-K through 1st Grade teams with the same three theme options; Academic, Artistic, & Social Civic.

Additionally, we have added guidance to insure that all teams understand that just because a topic is taught in class does not mean it must go under Academic.  The submissions for 2009 were heavily weighted to Academic in the Elementary category and many could have been categorized Social/Civic or Artistic.  The competition in Academic was fierce because of the number of entries categorized there, but in other categories there were very few entrants.

One last thought.  Consider allowing your student teams to choose a topic significant to them and then lay a plan to inform the audience and present a solution.  We have seen some done by very young children that present compelling solutions for authentic issues.  These can fall into any category.  The students will guide you.   Some examples we have seen:

                Fractions are Killing Student Progress

                I Can’t Read and I’m Scared

Stem Cell Research: Pros and Cons

Child Slavery on the Ivory Coast

                Why Does Literature Matter?

You get the idea.  Good luck.  We are very excited to see what this year will bring.  Please reach out to us if we can answer any questions to get you on your way.
